The President-Elect of the United States of America is a con artist. People in the news are calling him a “businessman” but most of his business ventures are at least partially fraudulent, and all of his charitable ventures are. He is making foreign policy on Twitter without having any sense of the complexity of the US’s overseas entanglements. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know and he doesn’t even care.
Only someone with the whitest and malest of privilege could spend this much time talking out their ass and still maintain the confidence of a whole whack of Americans. If Trump were black, or female, or poor, or brown, or gay, or disabled, he would not get the benefit of the doubt. But if he were any of these, Trump wouldn't be so...Trump-ish and 2017 wouldn't feel like a nation jumping off a cliff. His BS would have been named as such and his bombast would threaten his tenability as a candidate.
But his imminent fuck-ups will be so whole in their perfection that they might help Americans see rich-white-male privilege for what it is: unearned credibility.
He is really bad at being elite. He is such a see-through off-brand Presidential amateur that he self-satirizes handily, daily.
And after Trump, maybe we stop taking guys like Trump seriously. Maybe he will hurt us so bad and act so plainly in his own self-interest that all rich white men, and all just-because elites, from here on out will have to earn their kudos in politics and beyond. They won’t get the mic just because they portend confidence. They won’t leap behind the podium unless they’ve got a plan. They will trend towards team-play and modesty, even when they’re truly excellent at what they do.
